Alex Felicano in Cardboard bear costume

Bear head turns into Bear suit.

The day has come, halloween is here, and all this work is worth it. Gio has his afro cardboard frankenstein, Oscar is rocking a full cardboard Pokemon Charizard, Damien is welding a pair of custom cardboard katanas, and Alex is suited up as a cardboard bear. This is a shot of the Bear at work, before the Costume contest, second place! Don’t Shoot, I did not take the Picnic baskets and I am not a zombie.

Figure drawing event, Sketchbook look.

Sketching from life at Studio in Alpharetta. We had such a great model, she made my job easy. Mona had great poses and locked it in for sets of 1, 3 5 10 and 15 minute. I started with a red “Supracolor II soft made by Caran d’Ache“, (more) pencil, very soft , but I was alway able to find an edge and get tight when I wanted.  At first, I went back and forth and, finally settled on red. The end results were more than I hoped for.

Bear Head

Pushing hard towards halloween, flowing with Cardboard and Hot Glue, here is a picture of the Bear Head. You can check out earlier pics here. I’m happy with the head, I will be starting the suit next. Worried about the paint job, cardboard nude or custom paintjob? After halloween I will get back to the Clem Heads. Adding lots of detail, looking for the feeling of fur. I’ve never built a bear head before. but i have always wanted to build a large animal costume. Alex Feliciano, ” I might make it in time for halloween”.  We will see. I really …

Doodling the next few ideas for the ‘Clem Head’

More ‘Clem Head’ doodles this weekend. I’m using lots of pink, coral and magenta it just keeps happening. I went to 1shot‘s web site (below) they have all the colors I need. I was worried… “How I’m gonna mix that color”.  I don’t know if i can go full plaid, maybe if I had this machine. I might try to replicate this ‘water transfer printing technique’ with one of the Clem heads, thin paint and a bucket. Stole this off 1shot.com‘s site. I think I can find the colors I need. 130L Primrose Yellow 132L Lemon Yellow 134L Chrome Yellow …

Doodling for the ‘Clem Head’

More doodles, more ideas, more fun There are four more pages with this stamp of clem’s head, I will start rocking out the real thing after this weekend… Stay tuned and have a great weekend. Yellow on green with purple and red detail. I’m going to find my old 3D glasses when i get home and see what happens. I will be working on this over the weekend, If you have any suggestions please leave them in the comments below.

More heads and cardboard

Making costumes for Halloween! We have started early this year. All cardboard and maybe some paint this year. Yes it’s a giant animal head. This is where I’m at, as of last night. Tonight will be a coin flip sleep or ears. Starting with some basic shapes i’m worked the muzzle and eyes in, I built some shoulder pads (not pictured) and plan on mounting this to them.   Here is Gio modeling it, ears and paws are next… stay tuned.

Preparing to design more ‘Clem Heads’

Preparing for NEW Clem Dog Head paintings. Lots of ideas (Mexican wrestler, circulatory system, plaids, patterns, and or scale style masks). I though lots of sketches would be a good idea. So I cut a stamp out of this block. I need to get myself a press, Does anyone have a press they would like to trade for art work? Drawing now starting to cut a new linoleum block, this is going to be fun.   It took too long to find my knives. Everything came back to me once I had them in my hand. I think that will …

Painting number two, “Findings”, digging into the archives for new painting.

The act of discovery is something that set the senses a tingle. While I was digging through old sketchbooks for inspiration, and came across this ink drawing it’s 3.5″x5″.  I’m going to use it for painting number two, working title: Findings. I hope I can keep the spirit of the drawing in the new painting.  I used the attitude in a quick sketch for the painting, The canvas is oriented in portrait and slightly larger. I’m trimming some of the negative space, I hope this doesn’t kill the mood that makes the ink sketch special.Digging the toes on the left. This sketch has a lot …

Painting, it begins..again

I have been spending a lot of time this year sketching, in ‘@FiftyThree‘ s Paper53 app on the ipad or at the live drawing events held by #Alpharetta Figure Drawing/Painting Group. I think it’s time to start painting now. Working with brushes is flowing like it should. I start to paint after the kids go to bed then I lookup… and the sun is peeking in. Feels great to lose that much time. Three 40″x30″ canvases, and I have a 40″x70″ that i need to sand and surface. These pieces are still in progress, the one in the center is close to being done. Working on some, …

Getting sun in the pool

By the pool

List of things done and todo: Farmers market, Read cooking magazine by pool, Plan health meal for family and friends, Finish project with kids, Work emails, Send tax extension form. This is one of  the “sketches of spring” I will be attempting to make one a day, enjoy and share.

An AC malfunction, or a reason to get naked

It was hot

I came home early it was hot. Flicked controls on the thermostat. Nothing worked, which way is on? Heat cause it’s hot, that doesn’t sound wrong. Open a window, fiddled with the lock, left or right, it would not pop. Sweat, just a drop. That was it for me. I did care who might see. Flung coat and sweater over my head, shed skirt and tights passed my feet, now lounge bare to enjoyed the heat. This is one of  the “sketches of spring” I will be attempting to make one a day, enjoy and share.

By the Pool in a new suit

New Suit

New Suit The first warm day, the air is clean. I was to long curled within, sun nibbles willing skin. I dip my toe, that’s as far as I will go. Nothing is getting wet. The suit I bought to match the lot, will wait till it is hot. I smile as the children play, enticing me to join the fray. From chattering teeth they shout ‘COME IN’, but it’s a bit too cold to swim.   This is one of  the “sketches of spring” I will be attempting to make one a day, enjoy and share.

woman sitting on a sandy landscape

Early

Fifteen minutes that’s all I get. Just time enough, time to sit. It’s just three take-five’s rolled in one. Early is on time for some.  Just me, my time to breath. I see a spot and feel the breeze. The sun warm on my skin, feet in sand the cool below. Alone but soon they’ll show, In my head I’ll greet them all, “Hello, and welcome y’all”. This is one of  the “sketches of spring” I will be attempting to make one a day, enjoy and share.

Figure drawing event, Sketchbook look.

More figure drawing. I skipped into the figure drawing event today, like a kid going to get ice cream. The model was super and the lighting was challenging (in a good way). The short 3 and 5 minute poses came first, then a cookie break and then back to drawing with some longer poses. This time I didn’t forget to note the times for each drawing. A three minute pose. Getting into the 3 Minute thing, But I miss my blue pencil. This one was super awesome, the model was doing a scary ‘ROAR’ pose but kept laughing. Looking at again …

Fly go by

Fly go by Buzz buzz a nasty thing woke me from a sun filled dream. I saw a Fly go by, so I took my top off and sent it high. I pulled and pulled till the strings went twang then I launched at that tiny thing. It took a sec I used my eye aiming carefully down the line. The Fly saw me cocking back and almost had a heart attack. With a bit of a huff the fly began to fuss. “Me!” it said, “Oh no, why would you go semi-nude, just to swat this awesome dude”. Fields of Flowers

Fields of flowers Fields of flowers first pink and blue, I bought a suit that will sneak me through. Then today purple and yellow. I have been waiting all week things are on schedule. I bought this suit weeks ago to match a landscape, I’m not allowed to go. The bunnies will be playing ball, I will creep softly among them all. They will not see me. ‘Shh’, is what I think as one comes near. I hold my breath with hope and fear. It’s little nose sniffs the air. I feel so happy then I see… they are all staring at me. All at once they charge my way. I jump but …

Street art… Class!

Great working coming out of class this week. Jack pounded out character after character, so fast I didn’t get a picture of them all, “I’m just going to paint over this”.   Nicole nailed it with a 4 panel piece “Life”. The effort she’s putting into sketching is coming though in her can control and line work. Nicole rocking a “LIFE” piece. Finishing or starting? Done, SAT-16. Done, ‘LIFE’, Nicole.

Lots of figure drawing lately. It is good to draw like this again. I went to a class in Alpharetta, the ‘Alpharetta Figure Drawing/Painting Group’. They have a nice academic format, ten to twenty one minute warm ups, then some five and ten minute drawings. Oh and did I mention the cookies, lots of cookies. Then after a cookie break we do some longer poses. On this day, my first time at the event I forgot to note the times for each drawing… fear not I will fix that in the future. This was a short pose, I felt like warming up with hands. …

Class notes and homework

Hola class… Homework Practice letter forms, pick words  containing two vowels (like: seam, hoaps, lazer, or denim, feel free to make up words). Examples This intersecting style below shows the construction of the letter, when using this alphabet erase overlapping/intersecting lines as needed to make the letter whole. This Alphabet adds a bit more style to the ‘straight letter’ style above. You can use this out for that to experiment with style. Remember the better you understand the construction of a letter the easier it will be to style it. For review, how to make a letter… and, drop shadows…

Portfolio advice

I was poking around looking for some website inspiration and came across ‘design portfolio packs punch‘. I just wanted to add a few things… Like in the ‘Select your projects’ and ‘Look to the future’ part it talks about picking Items to show in your portfolio. I would encourage you to focus on picking projects you enjoyed working on. Most likely will want to work on more of them in the future. If you offer up the one’s that match your prospective clients, or that seem to be the shiniest you might find yourself doing work, rather than enjoying your work. That could lead …

Miguel!

I have an artist I would like to tell you about Miguel Ovalle, the website is Dizmology.com. We have been friends his since 1993 when I met him in miami. In 1994 he showed up to school in a homemade mask. It was made out of matte board, tape and glue and styled like a  power rangers helmet. I could not fathom at that time how he did it and found myself unable to think of anything else, I was making masks that weekend. He is still sculpting, painting and making amazing things. This is a solo project he is working on called ‘Encryption‘ and …

drawing pen and ink deer in a living room, with pink clouds coming from it's humps.

The show, shop.

Something Happened. Alex’s works for this show are slice of a complex and vibrant moment inside of what is often a mundane piece of reality.. Each piece is an effort to extract a cross-section from a commonplace experiences and show their wonder. His theme, “Something happened”, is an effort to illustrate the idea that we are all part of a bigger stories. Each piece is a slice out of these moments, moments we all share. In the end I made 16, 5×7 collages. They are a fractured series of vignettes. I start by creating geometric patterns onto a 5×7 piece …
