Jack at StreetArt Class

Mr. Jack is working hard on fill-ins. Lots of bits, broken rectangles and contrasting colors. We used the ‘sugar’ paint on card board about 6″ x 4″.

Day light savings time is working against us today. I have added a new day time shot.

Mr. Jack working from sketch. We are loving the new colors from ‘the paint yard’ and love getting boxes in the mail!

Day light photo.

Late night drawing

Tonight the house is quiet, dishes clean, and the kids asleep. In that stillness I blow the dust from a large 11″x14″ sketchbook.

Drawing and watercolor of a bearded gentleman holding coffee.goofing around with Windsor Newton watercolor pens. I have been sitting on these things for a while. The foam brush is nice.Really liking the marker ‘brush’ on this watercolor maker. When you are super fresh, show and prove.

Late night doodles

Yes, up late and making marks on paper, today I’m rocking a red sharpie, a red dry erase and a red Windsor Newton watercolor maker. Dogs and peaceshocka for pages.

All tiny little thorny. Small micro dogs stitched and fat. Dogs thin tiny little… again and again.

lots of red. Peace, peace, peace, peace, peace, peace, peace, peace….all red then I switch to using a strange black ink brush pen, foam tip style… not my fave, it might be a bit dry.

Davie artist Alex Feliciano

Florida WestFair Murals

Ran across this newspaper clipping while helping my mom move. I thought it might be fun to post. In 1996 a good friend of the family helped me get this gig painting murals. I was supposed to do a group thing where I organized my peers to come down and paint, but that didn’t happen so I painted two big ass murals myself. I’m sure made everyone involved very nervous.

It was two very long weekends where I painted the best and largest sunset I had ever done and spilt a pints worth of 1Shot fire red on it my head, painful and messy.

Alex feliciano helped the town of Davie get a head start for Florida WestFair last week by painting this western-style mural on the side of the First Union Bank building on Davie Road….

Street art class makes Prints

Stickers, you wanna’ make stickers… Ok, what do you know about a printing press?

So we selected some sketches, tried them out using thick makers on paper (Draw thick lines to cut thick lines). The students worked out the composition on paper then transferred it over to the rubber printing blocks. Then the scary part KNIFES you can’t make cool stuff without them. After a quick safety lesson including graphic descriptions of possible wounds I passed out the block cutting knifes, happy to report no injuries. HURRAY! They cut thin then cut thick ribbions out of the rubber block, soon they could see the block taking shape. In the end very few revisions where needed. Now a lesson on rollers, ink, and the printing press, they were like fish to water and after a demo, they quietly worked in turns one would be inking their block while the other was pressing. I couldn’t have hoped for better.

The happiness of making tangible items in such a tactile way was expressed in their quiet smiles and the care put into storing away the work.

Three woman paintings

alex feliciano Post-It notes

Update: Three woman paintings, they are working out. I have been finding moments to paint. Clem reminds me while she finds a warm spot on the floor in the studio. (Thanks Steve for the great easel). Three woman paintings, 30″ x 40″, acrylic on canvas. I have been going to a open sketch group and working up painting based on some of the sketches.

Street art class, on The PaintYard

The Paint Yard, wrote a nice post about the ‘Street Art Class’

The paint yard is a great place to get a variety of spray paint and supplies (fat caps, liners, specialty paints, markers and more) and they have the ‘Sugar’ from the makers of Ironlak, the paint is special. It combines water with alcohol made from sugar cane, replacing the usual petroleum-based solvents. The result is an extremely low-odor spray paint that contains fewer VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

It is important that students are safe and get to work with high quality materials, while learning the fundamentals of design and painting.

The ‘Street Art‘ class meets once a week (Tuesday at 5:30-7:30 come by and check us out). During the lessons we focus on drawing and painting followed by design reviews, the reviews and discussions are designed to engage the thoughtfulness needed to inspire creativity in young artist. Special thanks to ‘The Paintyard’ for the great sales on paint, and to Sis & Moon’s in Alpharetta, Ga for the wonderful teaching space.

Class Homework W2, Nov 2016

Watch some short video and have any questions ready to discuss, and Patterns

The Letter “E”:  https://youtu.be/kpaVkxB0Tw4

Watching a piece from start to finish: https://youtu.be/3US_fm0sWHo

Find examples of patterns, bring 3 or more, for use in next piece (They can be anything… save them to your device, print, magazine tear out or photos).

Sketch book 11″ × 8½”, a black book with smooth pages. Like this available where ever you like to by supplies.
Markers, I had some questions about markers. So you can find Touch and Copic Markers at at DickBlick in Roswell or you can shop Amazon/Google for ‘touch’ markers, most kits are no cheaper online, But if your willing to take delivery from China and wait weeks for delivery you can find some good deals..

Comparing and Contrasting

Lastly we will be looking at two different artist who approach street art from two different styles we will be comparing and contrasting in and short critique.

Sketching from life at Studio in Alpharetta.

We had such a great model, she made my job easy. Mona had great poses and locked it in for sets of 1, 3 5 10 and 15 minute.

I started with a red “Supracolor II soft made by Caran d’Ache“, (more) pencil, very soft , but I was alway able to find an edge and get tight when I wanted.  At first, I went back and forth and, finally settled on red. Painting number two, “Findings”, digging into the archives for new painting.

The act of discovery is something that set the senses a tingle. While I was digging through old sketchbooks for inspiration, and came across this ink drawing it’s 3.5″x5″.  I’m going to use it for painting number two, working title: Findings. I hope I can keep the spirit of the drawing in the new painting. img_3899-1 I used the attitude in a quick sketch for the painting, The canvas is oriented in portrait and slightly larger. I’m trimming some of the negative space, I hope this doesn’t kill the mood that makes the ink sketch special.img_3900-1Digging the toes on the left. This sketch has a lot of new elements and is different than the small original but i think it will still work.

Painting, it begins..again

I have been spending a lot of time this year sketching, in ‘@FiftyThree‘ s Paper53 app on the ipad or at the live drawing events held by #Alpharetta Figure Drawing/Painting Group. I think it’s time to start painting now. Working with brushes is flowing like it should. I start to paint after the kids go to bed then I lookup… and the sun is peeking in. Feels great to lose that much time.

Three 40″x30″ canvases, and I have a 40″x70″ that i need to sand and surface. These pieces are still in progress, the one in the center is close to being done.

Working on some, overdue, new pieces for #‎sisandmoon‬‘s. Lots of work to do but it’s coming out like it hasn’t in awhile.

It was hot

An AC malfunction, or a reason to get naked

I came home early it was hot. Flicked controls on the thermostat. Nothing worked, which way is on? Heat cause it’s hot, that doesn’t sound wrong. Open a window, fiddled with the lock, left or right, it would not pop. Sweat, just a drop. That was it for me. I did care who might see. Flung coat and sweater over my head, shed skirt and tights passed my feet, now lounge bare to enjoyed the heat.

New Suit

The first warm day, the air is clean.
I was to long curled within, sun nibbles willing skin.
I dip my toe, that’s as far as I will go.

Nothing is getting wet. The suit I bought to match the lot, will wait till it is hot.
I smile as the children play, enticing me to join the fray.
From chattering teeth they shout ‘COME IN’, but it’s a bit too cold to swim.

woman sitting on a sandy landscape

Fifteen minutes that’s all I get. Just time enough, time to sit. It’s just three take-five’s rolled in one. Early is on time for some.  Just me, my time to breath. I see a spot and feel the breeze. The sun warm on my skin, feet in sand the cool below. Alone but soon they’ll show, In my head I’ll greet them all, “Hello, and welcome y’all”.

Figure drawing event, Sketchbook look.

More figure drawing. I skipped into the figure drawing event today, like a kid going to get ice cream. The model was super and the lighting was challenging (in a good way).

The short 3 and 5 minute poses came first, then a cookie break and then back to drawing with some longer poses.

This time I didn’t forget to note the times for each drawing.

A three minute pose.

Getting into the 3 Minute thing, But I miss my blue pencil.

This one was super awesome, the model was doing a scary ‘ROAR’ pose but kept laughing. Looking at again I think I was able to get that in the drawing.

More three’s

Now some five minute drawings, the light is good on this one. going from 3 min to 5 min feels decadent.

The model has a pole, really focusing in on the hands and fingers.

Another pole 5 minute pole.

A 10 minute pose and I didn’t know what to do with myself, I spent the extra time on the hair.

Toes are very important. I continued working on the head (on the next page) after i ran out of space

Head hair and face, part of the previous 10 minute.

A twenty minute drawing, up went the hair. A had lots of time to think and see shadows.

The model picked up a guitar and I couldn’t resist working on the feet. They very rarely sit still. 20 min to be continued on the next page.
A quick Fun Fact: When I was in school our teacher, Mr Wyroba, had us draw 50 hands and 50 feet. At the time was was perplexed at the breath of such an undertaking. I remember the Michelangelo hand drawings and photocopies out of the ‘Anatomy for the Artist’ hands being passed around like they where cheat sheets. There were also the empty threats to do all fifty as middle finger salutes. I am so grateful for the support of my classmates and that lesson. I talk about the importance of hands and feet as a form of expression when ever I get the chance.

With 5 minutes-ish left I wanted to work on her hand holding the guitar.

Back to the feet for the last minute.

With this 20 minute I wanted to map some color. The light was taunting me with blue shadows.

Yes that is a giant guitar, very flat and it was hard to change my paradigm so I wrote it in.

A nice outline.

The last 15 minute, I think the model fell asleep on this one, I was able to focus on the face here.

Fly go by

woman flinging her top like a rubber band

Fly go by

Buzz buzz a nasty thing woke me from a sun filled dream. I saw a Fly go by, so I took my top off and sent it high. I pulled and pulled till the strings went twang then I launched at that tiny thing. It took a sec I used my eye aiming carefully down the line. The Fly saw me cocking back and almost had a heart attack. With a bit of a huff the fly began to fuss. “Me!” it said, “Oh no, why would you go semi-nude, just to swat this awesome dude”.

Fields of Flowers

 Fields of flowers

Fields of flowers first pink and blue, I bought a suit that will sneak me through. Then today purple and yellow. I have been waiting all week things are on schedule. I bought this suit weeks ago to match a landscape, I’m not allowed to go. The bunnies will be playing ball, I will creep softly among them all. They will not see me. ‘Shh’, is what I think as one comes near. I hold my breath with hope and fear. It’s little nose sniffs the air. I feel so happy then I see… they are all staring at me. All at once they charge my way. I jump but i’m too slow. They tickle me from head to toe. I guess they just want to play.

Late Night Monster

This is an old piece I found hiding in a friends room, it was never finished. I thought about re-working the canvas but decided to digitally work it instead. This is my first attempt. I’m using Paper53 on the iPad with a digital stylus ‘Pencil’, all very strange and fun. #madewithpaper / fiftythree.com

Portfolio advice

I was poking around looking for some website inspiration and came across ‘design portfolio packs punch‘. I just wanted to add a few things… Like in the ‘Select your projects’ and ‘Look to the future’ part it talks about picking Items to show in your portfolio. I would encourage you to focus on picking projects you enjoyed working on. Most likely will want to work on more of them in the future. If you offer up the one’s that match your prospective clients, or that seem to be the shiniest you might find yourself doing work, rather than enjoying your work. That could lead to a portfolio full of stuff you don’t enjoy ( yuck ).

‘Demonstrate critical thinking’ and ‘Use context’ areas are about your relationship to the project. How and why did you ‘grid’, ‘responsive’, or ‘interaction’. Most projects aren’t done in a vacuum and I would encourage you to touch on the collaborative effort that went into those projects. Highlight how well you work with others. If you have good interaction with teams and/or clients your future clients will want that goodness.

I have mixed feelings about the ‘Choose the right platform’ idea. I encourage you to explore a bit and see what works for you. I am old enough to remember when portfolios had to be mail out with return postage. Some of the packages that came in where as creative as the work inside. That is rarely the rule but a pleasant surprise when it did happen. There is no reason not to have a ‘safe’ portfolio and something more ‘exploratory’ The web has shifted the ‘barrier to entry’ in your favor.

baby H’s new room

The babys room…
I envision a forest or tree scape with woodland creatures. It should be grayscale, neutral, mono toned, or silhouette. Please put together some images that help shape the end product.

I love this one…

from the hospital in Seattle’s children’s unit.

Now for some purple, these color schemes can be tuned in any directions.

Mountain passage in purple.

Winter theme…

Sea side in blue.
I love the squirrel riding a beaver.

Great slicing into the wall.

This illustrator makes me smile… nice 1950’s vibe going on.

Some handpainted job, check out their site.

This is neat.
And now for something very different… I could see this happening, chalkboard background, and this on top.

Decals…
Supplement your background with these small add on’s, or do the whole thing as one big picture…

This is a wall graphic from etsy.

More decals…

55″ x 35″ Children’s Cabin in Woods Forest Tree House Wallpaper Leaves Nursery Wall Decal Art Bedroom Wall Paper Pink Light Grey
nice lines, and monochromatic-ish palette.

This Pinterest page is a bit redundant but covers lots of ground lots of trees here.

Grey with a splash of color

Something Different

This room is rad… link to the album..

Beautiful room, who knew blue and brown could sing.

Different!
Huge decal measures 72″w x 54″h

If we don’t want to paint…

light waves!

This site has a few simple ones.

A lot of folks like this mural thing, I love making and designing murals. When you change your visual space you change the expectation of the room. I hope you have fun!

Internal combustion, eat berries, and creating pink methane.

Then you fall in love buy a sofa.

When your away your dog is sleeping in your spot.

The reindeer have EPA restrictions, and green camouflage. Deer are color blind that’s why they have stylist. A good stylist get kisses.

The show, shop.

Something Happened.
Alex’s works for this show are slice of a complex and vibrant moment inside of what is often a mundane piece of reality.. Each piece is an effort to extract a cross-section from a commonplace experiences and show their wonder. His theme, “Something happened”, is an effort to illustrate the idea that we are all part of a bigger stories. Each piece is a slice out of these moments, moments we all share.

In the end I made 16, 5×7 collages. They are a fractured series of vignettes. I start by creating geometric patterns onto a 5×7 piece of paper, this serves as the foundation for the college. The collage is made up of colored paper and Ink layered between matte media. I cut small shapes, hands, heads, jaws, teeth, hair and beards out of colored paper. I spend a few days making patterns, and pieces, like stage settings. The narratives start to manifest at this point and decisions are made. Pieces are mounted and drawing embellishes are added between the layers of matte media. Some where before the final coat I attach it to a block of birch wood. The materials are simple and  I enjoy the process of building them up to create an effect of depth and atmosphere.

No.5 of 16, “Remember Me as I Was”. This illustrates the moment my dog first saw me after I shaved off my beard. Stepping into the kitchen, clean shaven and smelling like product, I startled her. She, for a moment, did not know who I was and readied herself for trouble.

Ok now to the shop part….
